Catawba Valley Medical Center (CVMC) offers a free support program for
children ages 5 to 12 whose parent or grandparent has cancer. The meetings,
held from 6:30 to 8pm on the last Tuesday of every month are offered in
the Hospital Classroom on the lower level of Catawba Valley Medical Center.
A light meal is provided as participants learn from clinical social worker
Liz Daniels about the PALS (Providing Awareness, Love and Support) program.
“A cancer diagnosis is scary for the whole family and can be difficult
to talk about,” said Liz Daniels, CVMC Social Worker. “A child’s
feelings may not be addressed because everyone is focused on absorbing
the news and getting started with treatment. The PALS program helps kids
identify their feelings and learn ways to manage them. They also meet
other families going through the same experience.”
During PALS, participants meet to learn about cancer, treatments and various
related topics that impact family dynamics related to cancer. For more
information or to register your child, please call Liz Daniels at (828)
