If you’ve found a babysitter you like and trust, great! You’re
almost ready to enjoy a night off. Below are some tips to insure you;
your children and your babysitter have the best experience possible.
Make your expectations clear. What are you looking for out of this arrangement? It’s important
your babysitter knows what is expected of them prior to hiring. Communicating
these expectations will help prevent feelings of frustration or disappoint
at the end of the night. Consider discussing responsibilities such as:
cleaning up messes, dirty dishes, straightening the house or preparing meals.
Give them a tour. No house is the same, so take time to orient a new babysitter to your home.
Show them where you keep the diapers, clothing, bottles, formula, food,
and snacks. Indicate which rooms are off-limits, locate all entrances
and exits, fire/burglar alarms, first aid supplies, flashlights and where
the children are safe to play.
Allow time for instructions. In the world of babysitting, every family is different. Never assume
your babysitter is an expert on your family. Before you leave review important
information regarding rules, schedules, special routine and activities.
Leave detailed information about your plans, your contact information,
the name and phone number of back-up adult, emergency services (9-1-1)
and the Poison Center 1-800-222-1222. Include your home telephone number
and address with clear directions on how to locate your house in case
Be certain they’re certified. It is as important to know rescue skills as it is to know how to care for
a child. Your child’s safety is your number one priority, so make
sure your babysitter knows what to do in case of an emergency. If you
have a sitter you and your children like, consider sending them to a babysitting
course where they can become CPR certified.
