GYN Surgery & Recovery
Comprehensive Women’s Health Services
The Center for Women and Children provides a comprehensive approach to
health for women of all ages. This includes special attention to the health
needs of mature women, which may involve our
Breast Health Center, advanced mammography services, and specialized surgical needs.
There are many reasons why a doctor would recommend a gynecological surgery
for a patient. Typically, they are used to remove tissue samples for cancer
screening, or to remove potentially cancerous growths. Surgery may also
be required for repairing damage caused by injury and aging.
Common Gynecology Procedures
Most gynecological surgeries are minimally invasive. Rather than cutting
a patient completely open to operate, our surgeons use advanced instruments
that can easily fit into openings or small incisions to perform an operation.
Without any major incisions made on the body, patients are able to recover
much faster in a minimally invasive operation.
Below are some examples of minimally invasive gynecological procedures
-
Laparoscopic Procedures – a laparoscope is a small, flexible camera that can be inserted
through small openings in the body. Laparoscopes stream a live feed of
the body’s insides to a nearby monitor. The surgeons uses the monitor
as a guide to perform the surgery without cutting a patient open. Laparoscopes
can be used to perform several operations, including hysterectomies and
tubal occlusion.
-
Hysteroscopy Procedures – In a hysteroscopy procedure, a camera is inserted into the womb. They are usually performed during the first week after a menstrual period
so that the doctor can get the best view possible. A hysteroscope is specifically
designed for viewing the uterus, making it advantageous to a laparoscope
in certain situations. These procedures are commonly used to treat polyps,
fibroids, adhesions, and abnormal bleeding.
Catawba Valley Medical Center is equipped with the cutting edge
Da Vinci Robotic Surgery System. With this advanced technology, our team is able to perform highly precise
and technical operations that put less strain on the patient and, in most
cases, shorten their hospital stay.
