Garland Hughes, MD has been a pillar of the internal medicine community of the Unifour for 30 years. After completing a biology degree at Purdue University (BOILER UP!), an AOA-honored medical degree at Indiana University and 6 years of residency and faculty appointment at the prestigious Parkland Hospital in Dallas Texas, he and Laurie were blessed to continue raising their two boys in the best community in the world. Dr, Hughes has been graced to be able to care for his outpatients and inpatients in partnership with Catawba Valley Medical Center for 30 years. The conception and direction of the hospitalist program at CVMC, which has been seen as a model program for community hospitals, was undertaken by Dr. Hughes. With “his” hospitalist program, he continues to strive to provide an atmosphere for superb care and patient experience in a top echelon community medical center environment.
Garland jokes: “I have run on ‘bout every road in the Unifour.” (Given that he has trained for and run 20 marathons, 50 miles on his 50th birthday, and 1200 miles of the Appalachian Trail, he’s probably ‘bout right)
