Catawba Valley Medical Center is proud to announce this quarter’s DAISY Award Recipient. The DAISY Award is designed to recognize exceptional nursing care. Join us in congratulating Donna Yates, who serves as a nurse in our Emergency Department.

Donna’s nomination included an account of how caring she was for a patient, but also the patient’s family. The nomination said “Donna Yates cared for my mother who was in a lot of pain. Donna really took the time to connect and talk to my mother while caring for her. She was so positive and attentive that it really lifted my mother’s spirits. Not only did she care for my mother, but she cared for me as well. My mother had to be transferred to Baptist for services not provided here. I had to run and get some of her belongings for her to take with her. I had worked the previous night, and we had been in the ED most of the day. Donna called to inform me that EMS was there to pick up my mother. I told her I was about 10 mins from the hospital with her things. Donna said, ‘I’m worried about you driving to Baptist I’ll make sure EMS waits till you get here.’ This seems like a simple thing, but it truly meant a lot to my mother and me. Donna went over and beyond to care for her patient and patient family. She is a true definition of our mission statement, Exceptional healthcare. Every person. Every time. Everyone in the ED that cared for my mother was great, but Donna really stood out!”

The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died of complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, they deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his entire family. When he died, they felt compelled to say “thank you” to nurses in a very public way. The award is given in numerous countries around the world. To learn more, visit DAISYFoundation.org.
