Catawba Valley Medical Center is proud to announce this quarter’s DAISY Award Recipient. The DAISY Award is designed to recognize exceptional nursing care. Join us in congratulating Ann Moore, RN, who serves as a Clinical Care Manager in our Emergency Department. Ann’s nomination detailed a heartfelt story of Ann’s compassion during a family’s difficult ER visit and the decisions that transpired.

The nomination said, “My 90 year old mamaw was seen in the ER on February 13th of this year. She had very recently gotten a devastating metastatic cancer diagnosis. We knew she was sick, but we didn’t know how little time we had left with her.  Ann was her nurse that day and she went above and beyond, as I’m sure she does with each patient she encounters. Ann told us quickly that her blood pressure was dangerously low and we were unsure what would happen next. Most of our family came to wait with us. This ER trip became one of the worst days of our lives, finding out soon after that the ‘treatments’ they were doing were just bandaids. When we made the difficult decision of taking her home into hospice care, Ann handled our worst day with grace and compassion. She talked us through every step, held our hands, prayed with us and loved on us! While we sat in a quiet room for a moment to compose ourselves Ann went to talk to Mamaw and asked if she could pray with her too. She provided comfort care until the ambulance was able to transport her home. Less than 12 hours later my mamaw would be in heaven. Ann treated my mamaw with the love and care that she would her own family. We were and still are so thankful for her providing a bit of love and kindness on a horrible day. Ann deserves 1,000 DAISY awards and more. She is a true blessing to her patients and their families.”

The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died of complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, they deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his entire family. When he died, they felt compelled to say “thank you” to nurses in a very public way.

The award is given in numerous countries around the world. To learn more, visit DAISYFoundation.org. If you would like to nominate someone to receive the DAISY Award, visit CatawbaValleyHealth.org/DAISY.
