Meet Riley Caldwell, one of CVMC’s newest respiratory therapists! Riley has taken an inspiring path from CNA to Respiratory Therapist, driven by her passion for patient care. The path into this respiratory field wasn’t one she had always envisioned, but what began as curiosity soon became a true calling.
“I was drawn to respiratory care because of its calm, quiet nature,” Riley said. “I’ve always wanted to help people, and in this role, I get to meet new patients every day, move between different floors, and be part of something dynamic and meaningful.”
Before stepping into this new chapter, Riley spent three years working as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at CVMC. That experience laid the foundation for her transition into respiratory therapy. “Working closely with patients, providing care, and learning how to communicate effectively gave me the skills I needed. Being a CNA taught me that patient care is about more than treatments—it’s about connecting with people on a human level.”
The road to becoming a respiratory therapist wasn’t without challenges. Long nights of studying, endless exams, and self-doubt often crept in. “There were times I wondered if I was good enough for this job,” Riley admitted. “But I’ve learned that perfection isn’t the goal—commitment and compassion are. With the support of my team and mentors, I kept moving forward.”
Now, in her new role, no two days are the same. From administering oxygen therapy and performing intubations to responding to unpredictable emergencies in the ER, every shift brings new challenges. But through it all, the most rewarding moments often come not from the procedures, but from the people.
“The times I’ve been able to comfort a patient’s family are the ones that stick with me the most. Being a calm, supportive presence during difficult moments is just as important as the medical care we provide.”
When asked what she enjoys most, Riley’s answer came quickly: the people. “Respiratory therapy may be a small field, but the connections I’ve made—with patients, families, and coworkers—are deeply meaningful. The camaraderie with my team makes all the difference.”
To anyone considering a career in respiratory therapy, Riley’s advice is heartfelt: “It’s fast-paced, hands-on, and incredibly rewarding. If you want to make a tangible impact on people’s lives every day, this is the field for you.”
Looking ahead, Riley’s goals are clear—continue learning, gain experience, and eventually pursue a bachelor’s degree. But one thing is certain: “Respiratory therapy is where I belong. I feel a deep sense of purpose in this field, and I’m grateful to be part of such an important profession.”
