Our practice manages acute and chronic illnesses, treats acute injuries, performs minor office surgeries and, when necessary, refers you to an appropriate specialist. This service provides direct access to the on-call provider, not a triage phone line, to increase access to care and is intended for medical questions or concerns. Please call 911 if you are experiencing a medical emergency.

Medical issues can strike at any moment and you’re primary care physician may not always be available to look after you right when you need them. When this happens, you can receive the medical attention you need at a Catawba Valley Extended Hours clinic.

Catawba Valley Health System currently operates two extended hours clinics:
Catawba Valley Extended Hours – Maiden – This clinic is open Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. No appointments are necessary.
Catawba Valley Extended Hours – Claremont – This clinic is open Mondays from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.

Urgent Care facilities offer a convenient option for injuries and illnesses that aren’t quite serious enough for the ER but still prompt you to seek a doctor’s care.

Catawba Valley Health System currently operates two Urgent Care clinics:

Our Providers

Annette Gwaltney, FNP-C

Annette Gwaltney is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner. Annette completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at Lenior Rhyne University. Annette was a member of the inaugural doctorate program at Lenior Rhyne University, graduating in May 2021 with a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree with a family practice focus. She enjoys traveling, watching sports, and spending time with family and friends. Annette lives in the Hickory area and she is grateful for the opportunity to be a provider at the CVFM-Viewmont office where dedication to the health and well-being of the community is a priority.

Kate Ryan, DO

Dr. Kate Ryan was born in Boone, North Carolina, and raised in the NC mountains. She graduated with honors in Biology from Lenoir-Rhyne University in 2012, where she was also a standout student-athlete, earning NCAA Division II All-American honors seven times in Cross Country and Track.

After graduation, Dr. Ryan spent a year serving as a missionary in Madagascar before enrolling in the inaugural class at Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she earned her medical degree in 2018. She then completed her residency in Family Medicine at SOVAH Health in Danville, Virginia.

Dr. Ryan joins us most recently from a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in Bassett, Virginia, where she practiced for four years. She is passionate about all aspects of family medicine, with special interests in pediatrics, women’s health, and sports medicine procedures.

Outside of work, Dr. Ryan enjoys spending time with her husband, Mike, and their two daughters—Grace and Peyton. Their family also includes a golden retriever named Crosby. She loves running, hiking, cooking, and anything outdoors. Dr. Ryan is excited to return to Hickory and serve the community she calls home.

Mary Britton, MD

Dr. Mary Britton was born in Danville, Illinois. Britton was raised in Ohio, where she stayed through high school and met her husband, Ernest Britton, who is her high school sweetheart. Britton’s father was a urologist and her mother was a pediatrician. She also has three older brothers who also work in the medical field

Dr. Britton attended the University of Akron to obtain her undergraduate degree, and then attended Northeastern Ohio University’s College of Medicine wheere she received her medical degree. She completed a family practice residency program at Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio.

In her spare time, she likes to spend time with family and friends. She has two beautiful children and two furry four-legged children, Bear and Teddy. She enjoys the outdoors and outdoor activities like playing tennis, running, walking, hiking and fishing.

Mimi Starnes, RN, MSN, FNP-C

Mimi Starnes is a board certified Nurse Practitioner. Mimi graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Lenoir Rhyne University in 1997. She earned a Master’s of Science degree in Nursing Administration from Clarkson College in Omaha, NE in 2001 and received her Family Nurse Practitioner Post Master’s Certificate from University of Massachusetts in Boston in 2014.

Puja Myne, MD

Puja Myne, MD, is originally from Rhode Island and received her Bachelor in Science from Providence College. After completing her medical degree at Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, she completed her residency in Janesville, WI. In her free time, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her family.

Shane Summers, MD

After receiving his medical degree from Ohio State University Medical School, Dr. Summers completed his family practice residency at St. Margaret’s Memorial Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and then his family practice residency program at Akron General Medical Center in Akron, Ohio. He is board certified in Family Medicine. He has practiced in the Hickory area since 1994.
