Catawba Advancement Program

Catawba Advancement Program

The Catawba Advancement Program offers financial assistance in the form of a forgivable loan for approved education expenses toward a 2-year degree in a professional nursing, imaging, respiratory therapy or surgical technology program.

The Details

  • You must be enrolled as a full-time student in the Approved Education program and have applied for financial aid through the college at which the program is being offered.
  • You must be employed with CVHS (prior to approval for admission into the CAP program) and work a minimum of two shifts in a six week period.
  • You must be approved for the CAP program and sign and return to CVHS a properly executed CAP Loan Promissory Note.

Catawba Valley Health System (CVHS) strives to create a student friendly atmosphere and provide student affiliates with a rewarding educational experience through opportunities in un-paid observations, internships, and clinical and non-clinical rotations. As an organization committed to health education, CVHS congratulates you on pursuing your goal as a healthcare worker.

To request an educational experience, click here for the Educational Experience Request Form. Although CVHS would like to honor all requests, completion of an Educational Experience Request Form does not guarantee placement.

For Clinical and Non-Clinical Groups: All clinical and non-clinical groups are arranged directly by a program coordinator at the affiliated educational institution and the Organizational Learning Department.

For Rehabilitation Services (Physical, Occupational, Speech Therapies) students: Therapy graduate students are not scheduled through the Organizational Learning Department. These students will secure their educational experience via their graduate program’s director of clinical education.

High School Students

High School Students

At CVHS, high school students have many opportunities to learn about exciting careers in healthcare through observation experiences and unpaid internships that are required by various high school programs such as Allied Health, Health Career Internships and the North Carolina Graduation Project (Senior Project).

To apply for an educational experience at CVHS:

  1. Contact the health occupations teacher, senior project coordinator or the program coordinator at your high school for approval.
  2. If an EAA is current, go to the Educational Experience Request Form link, and complete the process. Allow up to four (4) weeks to process.

This request form is for individual requests only, not for group requests. Group requests must be coordinated between the school contact person and the Student Program Coordinator at CVMC. If you have any questions, please call 828.326.3576.

These opportunities are for education purposes only. At this time, we cannot accommodate requests that are for personal career exploration.

College University Students

College / University Students

At CVHS, college/university students have many opportunities to participate in an observation experience or an unpaid internship to satisfy graduation requirements for their programs of study. Follow the steps below to begin.

To apply for an educational experience at CVHS:

  1. Contact your program coordinator or student advisor for a copy of the learning objectives for your unpaid internship or shadowing experience.
  2. If an EAA is current, go to the Educational Experience Request Form link, and complete the process. Allow up to four (4) weeks to process.

These opportunities are for an approved program of study only. When submitting the Educational Experience Request Form, you will be required to attach a course syllabus or project outline to show your learning objectives. Because space is limited, CVHS cannot place college students in an observation experience to satisfy program admission requirements.

APRN, PA, CNM, NP and SRNA Students

APRN, PA, CNM, NP and SRNA Students

As a center for health education, CVHS offers Physician Assistant and Advanced Practice Nursing Students (APRNs) opportunities for excellent clinical training.

For PA, CNM, and NP students: Physician Assistant (PA), Nurse Midwife (CNM), and Nurse Practitioner (NP) students placement process begins through the Organizational Learning Department by completing the Educational Experience Request Form. PA, CNM, and NP students are required to secure their own educational experience at CVHS.

Regarding placement with one of our CVHS Practices:

  • Before contacting the practices, please verify that your college/university and program of study has an established Educational Affiliation Agreement (EAA) with CVHS. If not, please see the Educational Affiliation Agreement page for instructions..
  • APRN, PA, CNM, and SRNA students are required to complete the Educational Experience Request Form.
  • Work with the program coordinator at your college/university to contact the practice where you would like to be placed. You can view information about our practices by clicking on the CVHS Practices link below.

Educational Affiliation Agreements

Educational Affiliation Agreements

To be eligible for an educational experience at CVHS, a student’s school MUST have a current Educational Affiliation Agreement (EAA) with CVHS and your program of study must be included in the EAA.

If your college/university and/or program of study does not have an established Educational Affiliation Agreement (EAA) with CVHS, ask an official representative from your school to send a written request via email to Katie Fulbright (kmfulbright@cvmc.us), Student Program Coordinator in Organizational Learning. This EAA request process may take up to eight weeks. The written request must include:

  • Complete name of school/school system, college, or university
  • Contact information of school’s official representative

An EAA must be finalized BEFORE a student can begin an educational experience at CVHS.

Student Definitions

Student Definitions

Observing (Shadowing) – According to the North Carolina DPI, observing/shadowing is a short-term educational experience that introduces an individual student to a particular job or career by pairing the student with an employee of a business, industry, or agency.

Observation experiences are permitted for students whose schools are affiliated with CVHS.

Internship – According to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, a Career Major Internship deviates from the General Internship in that the work-based experience is directly related to the classroom instruction and the chosen career focus of the student. It may be integrated within instruction or subsequent to the completion of instruction, e.g. course or course sequence. Unpaid internships are permitted for students whose schools are affiliated with CVHS.

Practicum – A course of study devoted to practical experience in a field.

Co-Op – A course of study devoted work-based learning supervised by an expert in the field.

  1. What is the process for an Educational Experience at CVHS?
    Organizational Learning is the first contact for students requesting an educational experience. You can contact Organizational Learning at 828.326.3576.
  2. Do you offer paid internships for students?
    No. Internships are unpaid only.
  3. What is required to begin an educational experience at CVHS?
    Catawba Valley Health System must have an active Educational Affiliation Agreement with your school to place you in an educational experience. If your school does not have an agreement with us, one can be developed; however, be aware that it can take 4-6 weeks to create a new agreement, so plan accordingly.
  4. What is the dress code for students?
    Professional attire is expected however it is requested that Learners do not wear scrubs or lab coats unless being an approved uniform of the program of study. Absolutely no denim clothing or blue jean colored clothing, skorts, shorts or transparent, see-through, low-cut, tight, or revealing clothing. Closed-toed practical shoes are required in clinical areas. Limited use of colognes/body sprays/lotions is requested to prevent allergic reaction and/or nausea/vomiting for our patient population. For safety and infection prevention reasons, jewelry and makeup should be minimal and conservative. CVHS Infections Prevention policy prohibits artificial nails or tips. Natural nails should be trimmed to a safe length, clean and, if painted, not chipped or worn. Please see your School Program Coordinator for the full dress code policy.
  5. Do I have to wear an ID badge
    Yes. The student’s ID badge should include the student’s name, picture, school/college/university and program of study. While in the learner role, the name badge must be worn at all times and be worn near the shoulder area so the name and photo are clearly visible. The student’s school should provide this ID badge.
  6. I have graduated from my school; can I still participate in an educational experience at CVHS?
    Student learners are required to be affiliated with a school to participate in an educational experience at CVHS.
  7. Am I required to go through Blood Borne Pathogen and HIPAA training?
    Yes. You are REQUIRED to complete annual training provided by your school/college/university prior to your educational experience at CVHS.
  8. As a student, where am I permitted to park?
    Students are required to park in employee parking lots only. Students are not permitted to park in visitor or patient parking lots.
  9. What if I’m an out-of-state educational institution, is my school approved?

Business and Physician Development

Business and Physician Development provides a personal link between you, your practice or your business, and Catawba Valley Health System. Our physician/industry liaison calls upon physician practices and business entities within our community. Our goal is to link primary and secondary service areas by providing reliable and up-to-date information regarding Catawba Valley Health System’s clinical services and physician resources.

  • Join 6 other BC Cardiologists and 5 Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) in employed practice
