Ben Haddock, Greg Kirk, athletic trainers, CVMC sports medicineThe Sports Medicine Program at Catawba Valley Medical Center provides education and healthcare services to the athletes, coaches, and parents of Catawba County and its surrounding areas. These services focus on the prevention, recognition, management, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.

Catawba Valley Medical Center provides certified athletic trainers to area schools as part of its sports medicine outreach program. As part of a complete health care team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other healthcare professionals, athletics administrators, coaches, and parents. Each of our certified athletic trainers has graduated from a four year university, passed a national certification exam, and been approved for licensure in North Carolina. Additionally, each athletic trainer is certified to provide baseline ImPACT Concussion Testing.

CVMC currently provides sports medicine services to:

  • Catawba Valley Community College
  • Bunker Hill High School
  • Bandys High School
  • Maiden High School
  • St. Stephens High School
  • Newton-Conover High School
  • Newton-Conover Middle School (football and wrestling)
  • H.M. Arndt Middle School (football and wrestling)
  • University Christian High School (soccer, volleyball, basketball)​

Services a certified athletic trainer can provide include the following:

  • Evaluation of athletic injuries
  • ImPACT concussion evaluation and management
  • Taping and/or bracing to prevent further injury
  • Treatment and/or rehabilitation of minor injuries
  • Determination of need for physician referral
  • Assistance in setting appointment to see physician
  • Coordination with physical therapist to assist with rehabilitation
  • Emergency first aid and CPR
  • Education on basic nutrition and hydration
  • Instruction on proper warm-up and cool-down stretching
  • Instruction on strength and conditioning techniques
