CVMC Named 2022 Best Maternity Hospital

Catawba Valley Medical Center was recently named as a 2022 Best Maternity Hospital by The Leapfrog Group in partnership with Money Magazine. Money and The Leapfrog Group selected 259 hospitals out of more than 2,200 hospitals around the country to receive the Best Hospitals for Maternity Care recognition.

“To receive this recognition truly shows CVMC’s dedication toward providing the best care possible for all patients,” said Chief Nursing Officer, Michelle Lusk. “We’re honored to be selected for this accolade out of thousands of hospitals.”

The Leapfrog Group is a nonprofit organization that aims to help consumers make informed decisions about their health and access safe, high-value care. The purpose of Leapfrog’s partnership with Money Magazine and the Best Hospitals ranking is to help expecting families make educated decisions about which institutions are best for their money.

The 259 hospitals that made the cut are a combination of hospitals that provide care for uncomplicated pregnancies, as well as hospitals that provide care for high-risk deliveries, such as offering neonatal intensive care units, etc.

To qualify for the list, eligible hospitals were required to carry an A or B letter grade on the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assessment for spring 2022. CVMC achieved an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Rating from Leapfrog for this time period.

Hospitals were also required to meet criteria specific to providing maternity care. The criteria included having 5% or less early elective deliveries, a cesarean birth rate of 23.6% or less, an episiotomy rate of 5% or less, 90% or more compliance with providing DVT prophylaxis to women who received a c-section, 90% or more compliance with screening for bilirubin among all infants, and providing proper care to infants with low birth weight.

“We are proud to achieve such an honor. Our staff of providers, nurses, and ancillary staff work diligently to provide the patients with the safest care possible,” said Jackie Miller, CVMC’s Administrator of Women and Children’s Services. “American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists guidelines are followed to ensure we are practicing based on research and evidence. We consistently exceed quality benchmarks, which is why we are being recognized for this prestigious accolade.”
