25th Annual Trivette Pediatric Symposium

Catawba Valley Medical Center and Organizational Learning was excited to host the 25th Annual Trivette Pediatric Symposium to over 90 participants on Wednesday, October 2, 2019. This half-day symposium invited local experts in pediatric mental health to discuss trending topics on how to address gaps in practice and incorporate key information to effectively manage mental and behavioral health concerns in children. Program topics included: ACES and resilience, suicide prevention, vaping, and the impact of social media use on our pediatric population.

This annual educational activity began in 1984 to honor the memory of Dr. Trivette, a compassionate and devoted pediatrician who was a native North Carolinian and graduated from Wake Forest University. He earned his medical degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1946. Dr. Trivette, together with Dr. John Lafferty, opened The Children’s Clinic, a pediatric practice, in Hickory in 1951. After Dr. Trivette retired in 1978, he was doing pediatric work with the US Army in Germany when he died unexpectedly in 1982. Dr. Spees, along with all the pediatricians and many nurses who had worked with Dr. Trivette considered different ways to honor his memory. The group decided on an a memorial fund that was established in Dr. Trivette’ s memory to provide continuing education for health care professionals in this area. The first Trivette Symposium was provided in 1984 to honor Dr. Trivette’ s legacy.
