6 Tips For A Healthy Holiday Season

‘Tis the season for holiday gatherings, delicious treats and special traditions. Unfortunately it’s also one of the busiest times for urgent care and emergency rooms too. “Amidst the craziness of the holiday season, parents might fail to notice something that may lead to injury that could have been prevented,” said Nurse Practitioner, Carrie Herman of Catawba Valley Family Medicine – Taylorsville. “Naturally there is an increase in activities for a family this time of year, but we encourage parents to stay aware of the potential hazards.

Here are 6 tips Carrie Herman recommends to help keep your family safe and healthy this holiday season:

  • Never leave children in a room with lighted candles; keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn
  • Keep matches, lighters and all flames out of reach of children
  • If you have a live tree, make sure the stand stays filled with water; artificial trees should be marked “fire-resistant”
  • Keep all alcohol out of the reach of children
  • Keep mistletoe and holly berries out of the reach of children; they can be toxic if too much is ingested
  • Choose the prefect toy for the right age and keep an eye on small pieces , like button batteries that may be included in electronic toys

Following these safety tips can help insure you spend your holidays injury-free but still festive.
