Stand Up for Better Health

If your job requires you to be in front of a computer, by the phone or behind a desk, chances are you spend a lot of time sitting. In fact the average office worker spends over 5 1/2 hours sitting every day. Studies show that people who live a chair-oriented, sedentary lifestyle are at higher risk of obesity, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and even some types of cancer. Researchers are now saying that prolonged sitting is just as bad as smoking, or maybe even worse.

“Our body’s were built to move so it’s no wonder that restricting ourselves to sit all day is having a negative effect,” says Scott Echleberger, Vice President of CVMC. “Therefore, a few of us have decided to stand up for our health, quite literally, by experimenting with stand-sit desks to help incorporate standing into our workday.” Having relied on a stand-sit desk since August, CVCM Administrative Coordinator, Kandi Lander reports that she has more energy, less lower back pain, feels more alert and focused and has even lost a few pounds!

What are the benefits of standing?

  • It helps relieve pressure on the lower back and legs, and helps reduce compression of the spine arising from long periods of sitting
  • It has been known to improve energy levels and cognition
  • It increases circulation and leads to better blood flow to the brain and other organs
  • It burns more calories than sitting
  • It assists with energy balance and aid in weight management

For those considering a standing desk Lisa Davis, CVMC Administrative Assistant, recommends alternating between sitting and standing throughout the day. Experts agree this helps reducing stress on your feet and lower back that may result from standing the entire day. Everyone is different, so finding what works best for you is most important.
