CVMC First in Area to Offer New Heart Failure Solution

Heart failure is one of the most common reasons why people age 65 and older are admitted to the hospital. Heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to work adequately to send blood to the organs and muscles of the body. Patients with heart failure are frequently hospitalized, have a reduced quality of life and face a higher risk of death. In a continuing effort to provide patients with the best quality of comprehensive care, Catawba Valley Medical Center (CVMC) is proud to be the first in the region to offer a new wireless heart failure solution. The CardioMEMS Heart Failure System, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in May 2014, allows the patients to transmit critical information about their heart failure status to a clinician on a regular basis, without the need for the additional clinic or hospital visits. This provides clinicians with the ability to detect worsening heart failure sooner and adjust treatment to reduce the likelihood that the patient will need to be hospitalized. It allows the doctors and nurses to treat the patient proactively rather than reactively after symptoms have already developed.

“The CardioMEMS system increases the quality of life for our patients who suffer from heart failure by allowing us to monitor them daily and adjust their therapies as needed. Following this proactive approach, we minimize the number of times patients have to be admitted to the hospital,” said Sara Paul, DNP FNP, at Catawba Valley Cardiology.
