Strides to Recovering from Breast Cancer

Finding out that you have cancer can leave you feeling overwhelmed, vulnerable, and alone. So much of the road to recovery is beyond the control of breast cancer patients. However, the ever-increasing numbers of survivors who do take charge of one major component of recovery find that it significantly improves their overall health and quality of daily life. That one component of recovery is commitment to exercise.

CVMC Fitness Plus offers a 12-week program specifically designed for cancer patients and survivors called Strides to Recovery. This program is designed to provide effective, inspiring workouts accommodating the unique concerns and physical limitations patients have following breast cancer surgery, chemotherapy or radiation.

“This well-rounded regimen helps women feel strong again while giving them an opportunity to maintain or regain strength and stamina often lost during cancer treatments,” said Tracy Glover, CVMC Health and Fitness Specialist. “Our professionally-trained staff offers personalized one-on-one exercise guidance, nutrition counseling, and a membership to Fitness Plus for the duration of the program.”

Strides to Recovery even helps women who were not active prior to getting diagnosed with breast cancer by starting very slowly and working within their unique fitness levels. Many breast cancer survivors report that by getting and staying active, they are able to get their lives back, enjoy more energy and do the things they enjoy most in life. Additionally, research demonstrates a strong link between an active lifestyle and a brighter future.

Strides to Recovery is made possible at CVMC with grant funding provided by Through Healing Eyes, Inc. and is FREE for breast cancer survivors who qualify. Through Healing Eyes, Inc. supports a wide array of programs in the Greater Hickory area offering inspiration and healing for those who have received a breast cancer diagnosis with support groups, yoga classes, wig banks and prosthetics. It also funds programs providing diagnostic services such as mammography and breast biopsies; and treatment options including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
