Catawba Valley Medical Center Nurse Receives Swallowing Disorders Certification

HICKORY, NC—Catawba Valley Medical Center recognizes Kristen Cline, MA, CCC-SLP, who was recently identified by the Specialty Board on Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders as a Board Recognized Specialist (BRS-S). This Board recognizes Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) who have advanced knowledge, skills and experience with swallowing and swallowing disorders. Kristen is only the fifth SLP in North Carolina to achieve BRS-S certification since its development in 1995 by the American Speech Language Hearing Association.

To qualify as a BRS-S, Kristen had to 1) have established a clinical practice specializing in swallowing disorders with a specified minimum number of contact hours per year; 2) have accrued a substantial number of Continuing Education hours in the area of swallowing disorders; and, 3) distinguish herself via research, administration and/or educational accomplishments. This program is becoming the standard for identifying an SLP who is an expert in swallowing disorders.
