“I Can Cope” Educational Program for Cancer Patients Kicks Off August 17

HICKORY, NC – Catawba Valley Medical Center and Frye Regional Medical Center are presenting “I Can Cope,” a four-week series of free educational classes for people with cancer, their families and friends, starting August 17.

The “I Can Cope” program is based on the premise that people who know more about their disease can make informed decisions with their doctors and become partners in their treatment. It provides factual, straightforward information about how cancer develops, diagnosis and treatment, side effects, communication skills, emotions and community resources. Program dates and speakers follow:

August 17 – Dr. Reggie Sigmon, Hickory Radiation Oncology
August 24 – Melanie Lutz and Deborah Barringer, Oncology Nurses
August 31 – Barbara Stark, Medical Social Worker
September 7 – Cancer Support Group Facilitators

Classes take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Catawba Valley Medical Center’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Center Conference Room, which is located on the Catawba Valley Medical Center campus. Participation in all four classes is encouraged but not required. Because enrollment is limited, pre-registration is appreciated. For more information or to register, please contact Peggy Messick at 828/485-2300, ext. 223, or Brenda Putnam at 828/326-2176.
