Breast Health Center

Catawba Valley Medical Center knows that early detection is critical in improving breast cancer survival rates. Because of this, our Center for Breast Health has invested in the most current technology available to pinpoint and begin treatment of breast cancer in its earliest stages. We work in tandem with our Comprehensive Cancer Center to inform you about the many treatment options available upon diagnosis, including advanced radiation therapy or surgical procedures. You’ll also receive the support you need, through educational programs and group sessions, to conduct regular self-exams and manage the treatment and recovery process.

Services

The Center offers state-of-the-art detection and diagnosis, such as Breast MRI, Breast Ultrasound and Breast Biopsy procedures. Our innovative screening and treatment options include:

3-D Mammography
Now offering a revolutionary new screening and diagnostic tools designed for early breast cancer detection that can be performed in conjunction with a traditional 2-D Digital mammogram. This new 3-D technology has been shown in clinical studies to be superior to digital mammography.

Digital Mammography
Can detect micro-calcifications as small as a single grain of salt.

Mobile Mammography

MammoSite
Delivers targeted radiation therapy to surrounding tissue after a lumpectomy to jump-start further treatments, such as chemotherapy.

SAVI SCOUT Technology
Leading-edge equipment allows the surgeon to precisely locate and remove cancerous cells instead of healthy breast tissue. This can lead to better cosmetic results where women may have fuller, more normally shaped breasts after surgery

Reach to Recovery
The Reach to Recovery program provides information and support to anyone facing breast cancer through one-on-one contact with American Cancer Society volunteers. Talking with a volunteer can help those facing breast cancer find the strength and resources to cope with their experience and to move forward as a survivor.

Reach to Recovery volunteers serve as role models. They are people who have survived breast cancer and who continue to live productive lives. They are trained to provide information and support to women or men who have been diagnosed with breast cancer or who may be facing a breast cancer diagnosis. Volunteers may meet with someone face-to-face or by telephone.

Whenever possible, the program attempts to match the person with a volunteer who is similar in age and who has had a similar breast cancer experience. There is no charge for the services Reach to Recovery volunteers provide. Call the CVMC Resource Center at 828.732.6054.

PET/CT Scanning Center

Stereotactic Needle Biopsy
Leading-edge equipment allows the surgeon or radiologist to precisely target extremely small masses or calcifications just millimeters in size. The computer calculates depth to the middle of the lesion, allowing the physician to effectively and quickly take samples for pathological examination.

Nurse Navigator
A cancer nurse navigator is available in the Breast Health Center to assist patients with education, coordinating appointments and transitioning to next steps when needed.
