So you’ve noticed your clothes are fitting a little tighter than
last year. That short trip up the stairs leaves you a bit more winded
than you remember. Or maybe you’ve just decided that the new year
is going to jumpstart a new (healthier) you. Every year, we make the promise
to ourselves that we are going to exercise more, eat right and lose weight.
However, drastic changes in your routine may not be the best (re)solution
according to Renee Greene, Wellness Dietition at CVMC’s Health First Center.
“A drastic change in your diet and activity level may work temporarily,
but statistics show that it’s highly unlikely you’ll maintain
that behavior over an extended period of time,” Renee says. “It’s
the small changes — the ones that are easier to make — that
really aid to weight loss success because these changes are the ones that
last over time.”
So, what is the trick to achieving your goals this year? Renee gives us
five small changes that can make big difference:
1.
Cut calories by making better choices. Small changes in your menu selection will lead to weight loss without
starving yourself. Replace a sweet tea or regular soda for water to save
over 200 calories. Choose a grilled chicken salad instead of a burger
and fries can save about 500 calories. Or replace snacks, like chips,
with a fruit to save 100 calories. You will be saving calories as well
as making healthier selections!
2.
Get more active! Take the stairs instead of the elevator; park farther from a store’s
entrance; trade TV for an activity like taking a walk.
3.
Choose just one goal at a time. Choose to eat five fruits and vegetables each day. Or Try to drink water
instead of sugary drinks. Or get organized by planning meals for the week.
4.
Gather around the dinner table! Choose to cook more meals at home. Eating out leads to less self-control
in making healthy choices.
5.
Don’t skip meals. By simply eating regularly scheduled meals, your body will run more efficiently.
Skipping meals causes weight gain because your body’s metabolism
slows and you tend to overeat at the next meal.
