Attending child safety seat violators have opportunity for ticket dismissal
HICKORY, NC – July 5, 2013 – Safe Kids Catawba County and the
Office of the District Attorney for Catawba County will hold a Child Passenger
Safety Diversion Program kickoff event, Thursday, July 11 from 1:30 p.m.
to 3:30 p.m. The child safety seat check will be held in the lower level
of the parking deck near Belk at Valley Hills Mall.
“Having a safety seat in your car is the first step toward lowering
the risk of fatal injury for children,” said Kayla Hefner, Safe
Kids Coordinator for Catawba County. “We have found that safety
seats are often improperly installed or used. We want this event to educate
more families and caregivers in hopes that serious injuries can be reduced.”
Catawba County will be the first to implement a Child Passenger Safety
Diversion program in Western North Carolina. This event and additional
seat check opportunities will give violators of the NC Child Passenger
Safety Law (G.S. 20 137.1) the chance to have their safety seat properly
installed and their fine dismissed, one time only.
“The District Attorney’s Office is proud to partner with Safe
Kids and our law enforcement agencies to promote child safety in Catawba
County,” said James C. Gaither, Jr., District Attorney. “These
child seat checks will help inform the public of the proper ways to install
child safety seats and help keep Catawba County’s children safer.”
Seat checks are also open to anyone looking to make sure their child is
riding safely. Please contact Kayla Hefner by calling (828) 485-2300 ext.
6204 for more information or to set up an appointment.
